The great jazz pianist and educator, Billy Taylor, recieved Usdan Center's 2001 Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts at the Gala Concert on August 1st.
Announcing the selection of Dr. Taylor for the award, Usdan Center Executive Director Dale Lewis, commented: "Billy Taylor is admired by millions of jazz enthusiasts worldwide and has been honored by hundreds of universities and arts centers.
In celebration of Dr. Taylor's 80th year, Usdan Center is proud to take its turn in honoring this treasured friend of more than thirty years.
In 1968, Usdan's inaugural season, Dr. Taylor and his trio appeared on the first series of Festival Concerts.
Since that time, he has performed here dozens of times, also conductiong master classes and advising us in the choice of concert artists and faculty for the Jazz Studies program.
From 1987 - 1989 Dr. Taylor served as Usdan's first Artisitc Advisor in Jazz.
He is a favorite at the Center's concerts and a beloved member of the artist faculty.
For having touched the lives of thousands of Usdanites, for embodying the dedication, inspiration and artistic integrity that have made him a role model around the globe and for the energetically supporting the Usdan mission, we are proud to present the 2001 Usdan Center Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts to Dr. Billy Taylor." |

"The first lady of the flute" PAULA ROBISON is treasured on several continents for bringing pure
intonation, beautifully varied tone and extraordinary technical mastery to an astonishingly diverse
repertoire. In addition to "classical" recitals with piano, guitar and harpsichord, her affinity for Brazilian
music is heard on two CDs, Brasileirinho (on the Omega label) and Rio Days, Rio Nights (on Arabesque).
She recently joined Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops for a "Brazilian Beat" program at Carnegie
Hall and made a southern tour of the United States with Robison-Lubambo-Baptista (joining guitarist
Romero Lubambo and percussionist Cyro Baptista). The trio next reunites for appearances at New York's
Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston's Gardner Museum, California's Ventura Chamber
Music Festival and a Minnesota Public Radio broadcast.
