The Campus

Usdan is situated on a magnificent 200-acre woodland campus in the Town of Huntington, Long Island. The Center's campus includes more than 70 studios and theaters situated on wooded hillsides. The buildings are grouped by department, allowing students to move easily from studio to studio for collaboration and camaraderie.

Usdan's studios and theater are home to more than 40 programs of study, including Orchestra, Band, Chorus, Jazz Studies, Guitar, Chamber Music, and Piano in the Music Department; Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and Tap Dance in the Dance Department; Musical Theater,Drama, and Technical Theater in the Theater Arts Department; Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Photography, Jewelry, Video Arts, Cartooning, Video Game Design, Animation,Fashion Design, and Illustration and Book Design in the Art Department; Nature and Ecology, and Organic Gardening in the Nature Department; and additional programs in creative writing, and in chess. The Center has three large outdoor swimming pools, a recreation area, and four modern tennis courts.

Many of the Center's buildings have won international architectural awards. The Andrew and Lily McKinley Amphitheater, Usdan's campus center, opened in 1999. It is a 1,000-seat, state-of-the-art theater that houses the series of daily Festival Concerts. Other major campus buildings include the Samuel and Lucille Lemberg Drama Center (1976) and the Jerrold Ross Discovery Center (2004.) The Maurice B. Hexter Chess Center (2004) also serves as Usdan's off-season conference center.

Usdan has enjoyed the dedication of three celebrated architectural firms during its 46-year history. Conklin and Rossant designed the original 1968 buildings, including those in the Music, Art, and Dance departments. The firm Johansen and Bhavnani (later Bhavnani and King) became Usdan's campus architects in 1974. Ashok Bhavnani designed the Photography Center and the Hexter Museum. The Lemberg Drama Center followed, and Mr. Bhavnani's later buildings include the Junior Chorus and Multi-Purpose buildings, and the Block Media Arts Center (1979, 2006.) His subsequent design for the McKinley Amphitheater is beloved by students and visitors alike. Usdan's current architects are principals in the firm Atkin, Olshin, Schade. AOS designed the Maurice B. Hexter Chess Center, and the Jerrold Ross Discovery Center.
